Intense- Pulsed- Light-Photofacial-skin-careSun spots, those dark spots that appear on sun-exposed skin over the years, are called many different names: age spots, liver spots, senile lentigo, and solar letigines, just to name a few. No matter what they are called, they all refer to the same thing: unsightly brown, gray or black flat spots which appear on areas of the skin that have been exposed to the sun. Sun spots vary in size, and are a result of over production of melanin (skin pigment). As we age, the melanocytes that deposit melanin in our skin cells work less effectively, and therefore melanin builds up in certain areas of the skin and cause these dark spots.

Areas of the body where sun spots are most likely to be found are:

  • Face
  • Back of Hands
  • Shoulders
  • Upper back
  • Forearms

Though people of all ages, gender or race can develop sun spots, they are more common in people with the following risk factors:

  • Over the age of 40
  • Fair skinned
  • History of frequent sun exposure
  • History of frequent tanning bed use

Sun spots are a cosmetic issue which can be fixed right in our office. Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, is a popular medical procedure that reduces the irregular discoloration of the skin caused by sun damage by applying a broad-spectrum light to the skin, which encourages new skin growth. IPL Photofacial is a non-ultra violet light that leaves you with more vibrant, clear and youthful skin. IPL not only dramatically removes the dark brown, gray or black sun spots, but it additionally stimulates collagen, reduces redness and brightens the skin. IPL requires no downtown and is usually fully effective after only 3-4 treatments.
