How hard is it to take care of your skin?

medical- grade-skin- care-line It is actually harder than you think! The bare minimum is to cleanse, moisturize and protect with SPF. But wait, we need to eat well too and make sure we wear sunblock 365 days a year (reapplying a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher every two hours and using proper clothing, hats and sunglasses when needed). Now with so many skin care companies in the world how do we pick the right regime for our skin? Plus mixing and matching products from different brands is ok right? Continue reading

What Should I Wear After Tummy Tuck?

Post-tummy tuck wardrobe options

Many of the questions that Dr. William LoVerme receives from his patients are about the plastic surgery recovery process and what life is like after surgery. An important part of the recovery and post-surgery life is comfortably dressing a newly re-shaped figure. In this blog post, Dr. LoVerme, a Boston plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, shares what tummy tuck patients should plan to wear after surgery.

Going Home from the Surgicenter

Immediately following tummy tuck surgery, your abdomen will be wrapped in bandages and a compression garment may be placed to control swelling. Dr. LoVerme advises patients to wear loose, baggy clothing to and from surgery. Pick a pair of drawstring pants and a zip-up or button-up top or jacket that can easily slip over the compression garment, bandages and possible drains. Avoid tops that go over your head, because reaching overhead immediately after surgery is discouraged.

First Week of Recovery

As your abdomen heals, you may have soreness and swelling. For comfort, continue to wear soft, comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Some women opt for roomy dresses instead of pants and a top. It’s up to you whether you feel more comfortable in a dress.

The abdominal compression garment should be worn at all times (except while bathing). It helps minimize swelling and promote optimal wound healing and scarring. Dr. LoVerme will let you know how long to wear your compression garment. Some patients are advised to wear the garment (or a similar Spanx garment) for up to six weeks or longer.

After Healing

After you have healed from surgery and the swelling has completely resolved, you will probably find that your wardrobe fits differently — namely, that pants and shorts are looser around your smaller abdomen. Most people go down a size or two (or more). You may opt to have your existing clothing altered by a tailor to perfect the fit, or you may treat yourself to a shopping spree for new options.

Even if you still wear the same size after surgery, your clothing should fit and flatter you better. You shouldn’t have a “muffin top” or a “spare tire” around your waist that hangs over jeans or pants. Your waist should look leaner and flatter, allowing you to try styles you never thought possible.

Some patients opt to accentuate their newly sculpted waist by adding stylish belts. A wrap dress is a classic piece that hugs a woman’s curves after tummy tuck. Skinny jeans and shorts are also more flattering with a firmer and leaner waist.

The Top 4 Reasons Why Men Pursue Plastic Surgery

Why men want plastic surgeryOne of the biggest recent trends in plastic surgery is the rise in male patients. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly one in 10 plastic surgery patients in 2014 was a man. As with women, men’s cosmetic goals are as varied as the men themselves are. Some want to look younger, while others want to look fitter. Nearly all want to preserve the characteristics that make them look masculine and rugged.

Here, Dr. William LoVerme, a plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, shares the top four reasons why men seek out plastic surgery.

To Look Younger

The baby boomers are more active than ever before. Exercise, yoga and meditation keeps many middle-aged men feeling young at heart. However even men in the best shape and optimal health can see the effects of aging crop up around the face and body. Plastic surgery can help tweak a man’s physical attributes so they reflect his youthful spirit.

To Keep Up with the Workplace

Putting your best face forward is critical in a competitive job market saturated with qualified employees of all ages. Men in pursuit of a promotion or new job may find that cosmetic enhancement gives them the edge they need to feel confident and capable in the boardroom or at an interview.

To Minimize Signs of Stress

The rigors of life at home and at work can physically manifest around the face or body, in the form of wrinkles, dark circles and a little extra fat “padding.” Plastic surgery erases these reminders of a sleepless night or parental stress.

To Address a Lifelong Source of Embarrassment

Some men silently struggle for years because they are embarrassed or ashamed of a certain feature. Consider the man who feels embarrassed by a crooked nose, or the man that has oversized breasts and feels too self-conscious to take his shirt off at the pool or beach. Surgical correction restores a “normal” appearance to those features for greater self-image and confidence.

Dr. LoVerme encourages all men that want to look their best to schedule an appointment with him to discuss their specific needs. He can recommend a suitable plan of treatment based on what the patient wants to accomplish.

Today’s male patients have many treatment options from which to choose. In some cases, a non-surgical treatment such as Botox or dermal filler injections is enough to achieve the desired results. In other cases, a procedure such as facelift, eyelid surgery or liposuction is the more effective solution.

Patient Satisfaction Soars after Breast Reduction

How breast reduction can change your life Ariel Winter, the star of ABC’s “Modern Family,” recently made headlines when she announced she had undergone breast reduction to alleviate the physical and psychological pain of her F-cup sized breasts. The 17-year-old told Glamour magazine, “The feeling of not having so much there was such a relief … I feel like a new person.”

Ariel’s experience is not unique. Dr. William LoVerme, a plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, has worked with many breast reduction patients whose lives change for the better after surgery. Studies have shown that breast reduction patients have some of the highest satisfaction rates after their procedure. Here’s why:

Alleviates Physical Pain

Women seeking breast reduction often have paralyzing pain in their back and neck. They may have permanent grooves on their shoulders because of their bra straps digging into the skin. Exercising is usually difficult because heavy, oversized breasts hinder movement and put extra stress on the body. Sometimes it is even hard to stand up straight because of pendulous breasts. By removing a substantial amount of breast tissue, the procedure literally lightens the load on the rest of the body; this improves posture and alleviates pain and discomfort.

Eliminates Psychological Discomfort

It is also common for women with large breasts to feel self-conscious, embarrassed and even ashamed of their bodies. For teenagers like Ariel, large breasts cause unwanted attention (often sexual in nature) and teasing or bullying from peers. Ariel mentioned to Glamour that before her surgery, she felt like her peers were talking about her breasts behind her back.

Breast reduction brings oversized breasts into better proportion with the rest of the body. Patients usually feel a sense of confidence and peace about their appearance and natural beauty after surgery.

Improves Quality of Life

In her interview with Glamour, Ariel shared some of the ways her life has improved after breast reduction — many of which Dr. LoVerme has heard from his patients, too.

  • The breasts look proportional to the rest of the body (neither too big nor too small).
  • It is easier to shop for clothes and find flattering styles.
  • Self-confidence skyrockets.
  • Posture improves.
  • Exercise and sports become fun again.

Best Beauty Habits

Beauty habits to adopt
As a busy plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, Dr. William LoVerme has worked with some of the most beautiful women in Boston. He is always curious how these women look so “put together,” and they are happy to explain their secrets. Here are a few of the beauty habits that Boston’s most gorgeous women have shared with Dr. LoVerme.

Remove Makeup Every Night

Women with beautiful, healthy skin religiously remove their makeup before bed. Leaving makeup on at night overexposes the skin to free radicals the makeup has picked up and held onto during the day. The result is the breakdown of collagen, which can lead to fine lines and other signs of premature aging, as well as clogged pores and acne breakouts.

If you want clear, radiant skin, you must be diligent about washing your face properly on a nightly basis. Keep a stash of makeup remover pads or wipes next to your bed for nights when you don’t have the time or energy to wash.

Exfoliate Regularly

Regular exfoliation is another beauty habit of women with luminous skin. The skin resurfacing technique removes dead, dull skin surface cells to reveal fresh, healthy skin underneath. Some women perform exfoliation at-home with a simple scrub. Others visit their plastic surgeon for a professional treatment called microdermabrasion. Available at Accurate Aesthetics, microdermabrasion involves using powder crystals to finely resurface the outer layers of skin. The result is glowing skin that looks and feels smooth.

Have Brows Professionally Shaped

Striking eyes should be framed with perfectly arched brows. The most beauty-conscious women know that brow shaping is best left to the professionals. Well-shaped brows make the eyes look younger, more rested and sexier (scraggly brows have the opposite effect).

Have you struggled to find the right eyebrow arch and size for your face shape? Or do your brows look sparse from years of over-plucking? Our medical esthetician provides eyebrow threading to achieve the most flattering arch. Threading only removes the hair without damaging the skin like other methods. Our esthetician can also suggest products to use at home to fill in brows.

Schedule Periodic Botox Appointments

Ever wonder why flawless women don’t have noticeable crow’s feet or forehead wrinkles? The secret is they are not immune from these wrinkles — but they fight them with an injectable wrinkle-reducer called Botox Cosmetic. Botox paralyzes muscle movement and smoothes the overlying wrinkles. Treatment is quick and convenient, and the results are almost instant (but temporary). Dr. LoVerme suggests repeating treatment approximately every four months to maintain the results.

Schedule Exilis Elite Appointments Yearly

Exilis Elite is a non-invasive radiofrequency treatment to tighten the skin and improve the quality of elastic and collagen fibers. While you will need a series of treatments the first time around, it has been found that the results can be maintained with one or two treatments annually.

Learn More about Additional Beauty Treatments

Microdermabrasion and Botox are not the only beauty treatments available at Accurate Aesthetics. Dr. LoVerme and his staff offer a full range of surgical and non-surgical treatments to improve the beauty and health of the face and skin.

If you have other beauty-related needs, the Accurate Aesthetics team would be happy to help you find a solution. Please call (877) 603-7874 to schedule an appointment to meet with us.
