What Should I Wear After Tummy Tuck?

Post-tummy tuck wardrobe options

Many of the questions that Dr. William LoVerme receives from his patients are about the plastic surgery recovery process and what life is like after surgery. An important part of the recovery and post-surgery life is comfortably dressing a newly re-shaped figure. In this blog post, Dr. LoVerme, a Boston plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, shares what tummy tuck patients should plan to wear after surgery.

Going Home from the Surgicenter

Immediately following tummy tuck surgery, your abdomen will be wrapped in bandages and a compression garment may be placed to control swelling. Dr. LoVerme advises patients to wear loose, baggy clothing to and from surgery. Pick a pair of drawstring pants and a zip-up or button-up top or jacket that can easily slip over the compression garment, bandages and possible drains. Avoid tops that go over your head, because reaching overhead immediately after surgery is discouraged.

First Week of Recovery

As your abdomen heals, you may have soreness and swelling. For comfort, continue to wear soft, comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Some women opt for roomy dresses instead of pants and a top. It’s up to you whether you feel more comfortable in a dress.

The abdominal compression garment should be worn at all times (except while bathing). It helps minimize swelling and promote optimal wound healing and scarring. Dr. LoVerme will let you know how long to wear your compression garment. Some patients are advised to wear the garment (or a similar Spanx garment) for up to six weeks or longer.

After Healing

After you have healed from surgery and the swelling has completely resolved, you will probably find that your wardrobe fits differently — namely, that pants and shorts are looser around your smaller abdomen. Most people go down a size or two (or more). You may opt to have your existing clothing altered by a tailor to perfect the fit, or you may treat yourself to a shopping spree for new options.

Even if you still wear the same size after surgery, your clothing should fit and flatter you better. You shouldn’t have a “muffin top” or a “spare tire” around your waist that hangs over jeans or pants. Your waist should look leaner and flatter, allowing you to try styles you never thought possible.

Some patients opt to accentuate their newly sculpted waist by adding stylish belts. A wrap dress is a classic piece that hugs a woman’s curves after tummy tuck. Skinny jeans and shorts are also more flattering with a firmer and leaner waist.

The Top 4 Reasons Why Men Pursue Plastic Surgery

Why men want plastic surgeryOne of the biggest recent trends in plastic surgery is the rise in male patients. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly one in 10 plastic surgery patients in 2014 was a man. As with women, men’s cosmetic goals are as varied as the men themselves are. Some want to look younger, while others want to look fitter. Nearly all want to preserve the characteristics that make them look masculine and rugged.

Here, Dr. William LoVerme, a plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, shares the top four reasons why men seek out plastic surgery.

To Look Younger

The baby boomers are more active than ever before. Exercise, yoga and meditation keeps many middle-aged men feeling young at heart. However even men in the best shape and optimal health can see the effects of aging crop up around the face and body. Plastic surgery can help tweak a man’s physical attributes so they reflect his youthful spirit.

To Keep Up with the Workplace

Putting your best face forward is critical in a competitive job market saturated with qualified employees of all ages. Men in pursuit of a promotion or new job may find that cosmetic enhancement gives them the edge they need to feel confident and capable in the boardroom or at an interview.

To Minimize Signs of Stress

The rigors of life at home and at work can physically manifest around the face or body, in the form of wrinkles, dark circles and a little extra fat “padding.” Plastic surgery erases these reminders of a sleepless night or parental stress.

To Address a Lifelong Source of Embarrassment

Some men silently struggle for years because they are embarrassed or ashamed of a certain feature. Consider the man who feels embarrassed by a crooked nose, or the man that has oversized breasts and feels too self-conscious to take his shirt off at the pool or beach. Surgical correction restores a “normal” appearance to those features for greater self-image and confidence.

Learn More about Male Plastic Surgery with Dr. LoVerme

Dr. LoVerme encourages all men that want to look their best to schedule an appointment with him to discuss their specific needs. He can recommend a suitable plan of treatment based on what the patient wants to accomplish.

Today’s male patients have many treatment options from which to choose. In some cases, a non-surgical treatment such as Botox or dermal filler injections is enough to achieve the desired results. In other cases, a procedure such as facelift, eyelid surgery or liposuction is the more effective solution.

Patient Satisfaction Soars after Breast Reduction

How breast reduction can change your life Ariel Winter, the star of ABC’s “Modern Family,” recently made headlines when she announced she had undergone breast reduction to alleviate the physical and psychological pain of her F-cup sized breasts. The 17-year-old told Glamour magazine, “The feeling of not having so much there was such a relief … I feel like a new person.”

Ariel’s experience is not unique. Dr. William LoVerme, a plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, has worked with many breast reduction patients whose lives change for the better after surgery. Studies have shown that breast reduction patients have some of the highest satisfaction rates after their procedure. Here’s why:

Alleviates Physical Pain

Women seeking breast reduction often have paralyzing pain in their back and neck. They may have permanent grooves on their shoulders because of their bra straps digging into the skin. Exercising is usually difficult because heavy, oversized breasts hinder movement and put extra stress on the body. Sometimes it is even hard to stand up straight because of pendulous breasts. By removing a substantial amount of breast tissue, the procedure literally lightens the load on the rest of the body; this improves posture and alleviates pain and discomfort.

Eliminates Psychological Discomfort

It is also common for women with large breasts to feel self-conscious, embarrassed and even ashamed of their bodies. For teenagers like Ariel, large breasts cause unwanted attention (often sexual in nature) and teasing or bullying from peers. Ariel mentioned to Glamour that before her surgery, she felt like her peers were talking about her breasts behind her back.

Breast reduction brings oversized breasts into better proportion with the rest of the body. Patients usually feel a sense of confidence and peace about their appearance and natural beauty after surgery.

Improves Quality of Life

In her interview with Glamour, Ariel shared some of the ways her life has improved after breast reduction — many of which Dr. LoVerme has heard from his patients, too.

  • The breasts look proportional to the rest of the body (neither too big nor too small).
  • It is easier to shop for clothes and find flattering styles.
  • Self-confidence skyrockets.
  • Posture improves.
  • Exercise and sports become fun again.

Best Beauty Habits

Beauty habits to adopt
As a busy plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, Dr. William LoVerme has worked with some of the most beautiful women in Boston. He is always curious how these women look so “put together,” and they are happy to explain their secrets. Here are a few of the beauty habits that Boston’s most gorgeous women have shared with Dr. LoVerme.

Remove Makeup Every Night

Women with beautiful, healthy skin religiously remove their makeup before bed. Leaving makeup on at night overexposes the skin to free radicals the makeup has picked up and held onto during the day. The result is the breakdown of collagen, which can lead to fine lines and other signs of premature aging, as well as clogged pores and acne breakouts.

If you want clear, radiant skin, you must be diligent about washing your face properly on a nightly basis. Keep a stash of makeup remover pads or wipes next to your bed for nights when you don’t have the time or energy to wash.

Exfoliate Regularly

Regular exfoliation is another beauty habit of women with luminous skin. The skin resurfacing technique removes dead, dull skin surface cells to reveal fresh, healthy skin underneath. Some women perform exfoliation at-home with a simple scrub. Others visit their plastic surgeon for a professional treatment called microdermabrasion. Available at Accurate Aesthetics, microdermabrasion involves using powder crystals to finely resurface the outer layers of skin. The result is glowing skin that looks and feels smooth.

Have Brows Professionally Shaped

Striking eyes should be framed with perfectly arched brows. The most beauty-conscious women know that brow shaping is best left to the professionals. Well-shaped brows make the eyes look younger, more rested and sexier (scraggly brows have the opposite effect).

Have you struggled to find the right eyebrow arch and size for your face shape? Or do your brows look sparse from years of over-plucking? Our medical esthetician provides eyebrow threading to achieve the most flattering arch. Threading only removes the hair without damaging the skin like other methods. Our esthetician can also suggest products to use at home to fill in brows.

Schedule Periodic Botox Appointments

Ever wonder why flawless women don’t have noticeable crow’s feet or forehead wrinkles? The secret is they are not immune from these wrinkles — but they fight them with an injectable wrinkle-reducer called Botox Cosmetic. Botox paralyzes muscle movement and smoothes the overlying wrinkles. Treatment is quick and convenient, and the results are almost instant (but temporary). Dr. LoVerme suggests repeating treatment approximately every four months to maintain the results.

Schedule Exilis Elite Appointments Yearly

Exilis Elite is a non-invasive radiofrequency treatment to tighten the skin and improve the quality of elastic and collagen fibers. While you will need a series of treatments the first time around, it has been found that the results can be maintained with one or two treatments annually.

Learn More about Additional Beauty Treatments

Microdermabrasion and Botox are not the only beauty treatments available at Accurate Aesthetics. Dr. LoVerme and his staff offer a full range of surgical and non-surgical treatments to improve the beauty and health of the face and skin.

If you have other beauty-related needs, the Accurate Aesthetics team would be happy to help you find a solution. Please call (877) 603-7874 to schedule an appointment to meet with us.

Global Trends in Plastic Surgery

south beach iStock_000010512037XSmallOccasionally, it’s interesting to consider plastic surgery in a global context. Every country has its own standard of beauty and idea of what is desirable. Also, innovators around the world are constantly working to improve the techniques and technology plastic surgeons use.

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), an organization comprised of more than 2,700 board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons in 95 countries, recently released its 2014 report on the state of plastic surgery in the world. The report was based on data from 1,391 plastic surgeons and revealed that more than 20 million surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed around the world in 2014.

Here Dr. William LoVerme of Accurate Aesthetics shares a few of the findings.

What Procedures Are Most Popular Around the World?

Globally, Botox is the most popular cosmetic procedure for men and women. More than 4.8 million botulinum toxin injectable procedures (including Botox, Dysport and Xeomin products) were performed last year. Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed surgical procedure for women. For men, eyelid surgery is most prevalent.

What Country Has the Busiest Plastic Surgery Scene?

Twenty percent of all cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States, making it the country with the busiest plastic surgery scene. Brazil was the country with the second-highest number of procedures performed. Japan, South Korea and Mexico rounded out the top five.

More Men Having Surgery

Men accounted for 13.7 percent of plastic surgery patients worldwide. They had more than 2.5 million procedures performed. In addition to eyelid surgery, men also opted for rhinoplasty, liposuction, gynecomastia treatment and fat grafting.

Women Had 17 Million Cosmetic Procedures

In addition to breast augmentation, the most popular procedures among women were liposuction, eyelid surgery, fat grafting and tummy tuck.

Other Surprising Discoveries, According to the ISAPS

  • Turkey is experiencing a boom in medical tourism for hair transplantation. Fifteen thousand people have traveled to Turkey to have hair transplants. This includes facial hair transplants, which are very popular among Arab patients.
  • A growing number of patients in the United Arab Emirates are requesting facelift and rhinoplasty to resemble pop stars.
  • The doctor credited with the buttock implant is from Mexico.
  • Latin America boasts five out of the top 10 countries for cosmetic surgery.
  • Brazilians can write off the cost of breast augmentation or rhinoplasty on their income taxes.

Why Labiaplasty Is Becoming More Popular

Labiaplasty procedures on the rise

Last year, labiaplasty experienced a dramatic rise in popularity. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, labiaplasty procedures increased by 44 percent from 2013. The number of surgeons offering the procedure rose as well.

In this post, Dr. William LoVerme, the Boston plastic surgeon at Accurate Aesthetics, explains the reasons why labiaplasty is becoming more common amongst his female plastic surgery patients.

Improves Self-Confidence and Quality of Life

Women with enlarged, elongated, unusually shaped or asymmetrical labia (the folds of skin outside the vagina) may suffer from low self-confidence. They might feel insecure or withdrawn, or experience depression or anxiety. They might refrain from certain activities like swimming or exercising and avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing.

Since the size and shape of a woman’s labia are usually determined by genetic factors, many of Dr. LoVerme’s patients feel self-conscious of their labia from the time they are teenagers (or even adolescents). Other women notice an unwanted cosmetic change in their labia over time, after pregnancy, childbirth or weight fluctuation, and gradually become more dissatisfied.

By improving the appearance of the labia, Dr. LoVerme’s patients enjoy a more classically feminine looking labia and improved confidence. Their anxious or depressed feelings resolve. Their wardrobe options expand, their activity level increases and their quality of life skyrockets.

Eliminates Physical Discomfort

Oversized, elongated or asymmetrical labia can cause physical discomfort, too. The labia may rub uncomfortably against tight-fitting clothing, chafe or become irritated. Sex may be painful due to the size or shape of the labia.

By removing excess labial tissue, the procedure alleviates pain and discomfort. Many women find that they are more comfortable exercising, riding a bike and playing sports.

Boosts Libido

A woman’s libido can be severely affected by dissatisfaction with her labia. She may experience physical discomfort or pain during sex, and therefore avoid it. Or, she may feel so self-conscious of her labia’s appearance that she has no desire for sexual intimacy.

Improving the size and shape of the labia is often associated with a boost in libido. Physically, sex becomes more enjoyable and desirable, and psychologically, it is a more pleasurable experience.

How Long Do Non-Surgical Treatments Last?

eyelid 1Data from leading plastic surgery organizations shows that non-surgical cosmetic treatments are more popular than ever.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 13.9 million non-surgical procedures were performed in 2014. And, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that non-surgical cosmetic procedures are 520 percent more popular than they were in 1997.

Patients enjoy the incredible anti-aging and beautifying effects of treatment without incisions, anesthesia or the long recovery downtime typically associated with surgical procedures.

Dr. William LoVerme, who offers a wide range of non-surgical treatments at his Boston plastic surgery practice, is often asked about the longevity of non-surgical treatments. Here, he explains how long you can expect results of the most popular treatments to last.

Botox

Botox injections generally last three to six months. Dr. LoVerme recommends scheduling regular treatments to maintain the wrinkle-fighting and facial rejuvenation effects of Botox.

Fillers

How long the results of dermal filler treatment last depends largely on the ingredients of the particular product.

Results of treatment with hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as Restylane and Juvederm, typically last six to 12 months. And poly-l-lactic acid-based fillers can last up to two years before they eventually disintegrate and are absorbed by the body.

Juvederm Voluma XC is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler designed to plump up the cheek area. It lasts much longer than other hyaluronic acid-based fillers (up to two years) before repeat treatment is needed.

Hair Removal

Laser hair removal generally requires a series of treatments to achieve the desired result of smooth, hair-free skin. Dr. LoVerme and our team use the Palomar MediLux pulsed light system, which is similar to a laser in that it delivers an intense beam of light to destroy hair follicles in the desired area, thereby preventing the follicles from producing more hair. Our hair removal patients can enjoy permanent results, thanks to the MediLux system.

Exilis Radiofrequency Treatments

The results of the non-surgical skin lifting/tightening treatment appear gradually, as the body produces fresh new collagen. Maximum results appear around the three-month post-treatment mark, and can last several months to several years, depending on the aging process of the individual patient. In some cases, Exilis Elite can stave off the need for more invasive surgical rejuvenation treatment (e.g., facelift). Although the results may last up to two years we suggest that patients come back at one year intervals for touch up treatments.

Tips to Rev Up Your Metabolism

shutterstock_100035593Anyone trying to slim down should understand the basics of their metabolism. This is the process by which the body processes food/beverage intake and converts it into energy. If you have a faster metabolism, you will naturally burn more calories with less effort. If you have a slow metabolism, you might struggle with weight loss efforts.

While metabolism is mostly pre-set, determined by your biological makeup, there are things you can do to work with your metabolism and burn more calories for better weight loss results. Just ask John Berardi, Ph.D., C.S.C.S., who wrote The Metabolism Advantage. “You have a huge amount of control over your metabolic rate,” he says.

Here are a few tips to rev up your metabolism:

Eat a Substantial Breakfast

Skipping breakfast sends your body into starvation mode and slows your metabolism to conserve energy. According to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, people that ate 22 to 55 percent of the total calories at breakfast gained less weight on average over a four year-period than those who ate 0 to 11 percent of their calories at breakfast.

Incorporate Intervals into Your Workout

Increasing the intensity of your workout for short intervals is an excellent way to make your body burn calories faster. Pick up the pace for 30-60 second increments during your next run, swim or walk. Alternate your regular pace with 30-60 second bursts of high intensity work (increase your incline or pace).

Lift Weights

Muscle uses more energy than fat. A pound of muscle will burn more calories during workouts and downtime than a pound of fat, so it’s essential to build muscle mass. If you don’t currently lift weights, incorporate some strength training into your routine. Use a resistance band, kettlebell or hand weights a few time a week, and start seeing results.

Enjoy Your Coffee

A study published in the Physiology & Behavior journal found that caffeinated-coffee drinkers had a 16 percent higher average metabolic rate than decaf drinkers. The caffeine increases your heart rate and breathing, stimulating your central nervous system. Just don’t overdo it!

Avoid Excessive Drinking

According to an article in Redbook, drinking in excess can adversely affect your metabolism. (Hangovers can also lead to poor dietary choices!) Practice moderation when drinking and mix in glasses of water between alcoholic drinks.

Practice Stress Management

Feeling stressed spikes your cortisol levels, which causes the body to hang on to fat. Lower your stress levels with your desired method — reading, meditating, taking a yoga class or watching funny YouTube video clips.

Are Diet and Exercise Efforts Not Giving You the Body You Want?

If your natural attempts to sculpt your body simply aren’t working, have you considered plastic surgery? Dr. William LoVerme of Accurate Aesthetics offers a range of body sculpting procedures for a tighter and more toned looking physique. Liposuction and tummy tuck are popular options.

What to Do – and What Not to Do – to Optimize Your Surgical Results

iStock_000005966711XSmallWhen you produce results as spectacular as Dr. William E. LoVerme does, it is understandable that your patients want to maintain the outcomes for years to come. Dr. LoVerme is frequently asked by patients how to enjoy a rejuvenated face, sculpted body or enhanced breasts for as long as possible.

In this blog post, Dr. LoVerme shares some helpful do’s and don’ts to optimize plastic surgery results and stave off the inevitable effects of aging.

Do: Follow Dr. LoVerme’s Post-Op Instructions

The first step to long-lasting results is a smooth recovery. Dr. LoVerme and his team will provide you with detailed recovery care instructions, which include wearing supportive garments, taking (and refraining from) certain medications, using ice to control swelling and limiting physical activity. The doctor will also specify when to return to the office for post-op visits so he can check your healing progress and keep an eye out for any potential problems.

Do: Properly Care for the Incision Site/Treated Skin

In the packet of post-op instructions, Dr. LoVerme specifies exactly how and when to clean the surgical incision and treated area, as well as behaviors to avoid (e.g., picking or peeling the skin). These instructions promote a healthy healing process and set the stage for optimal results.

Do: Use Recommended Skincare Products

If you had facial plastic surgery, certain medical grade skincare products will nurture the skin as it heals, and extend the results of the procedure. Dr. LoVerme’s team can customize a skincare regimen, including cleansing and moisturizing products, designed specifically for your unique needs.

Do: Hydrate

Want to preserve your glowing, radiant skin? Staying properly hydrated is important to the health, vitality and elasticity of your skin (as well as your overall health). Drink water and avoid excess alcohol, which can dehydrate and prematurely age you.

Don’t: Sit in the Sun

The sun’s rays can darken your incision scars, harm your skin and accelerate the aging process. If you plan to be outdoors in the sun for a prolonged period of time, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Don’t: Smoke

Smoking slows your body’s healing process down and speeds up the aging process! If you value a youthful appearance and long-lasting facial rejuvenation results, avoid smoking altogether.

Don’t: Dramatically Fluctuate in Weight

If you’ve had body sculpting surgery, it is important that you stay close to your current weight after recovering. Dramatic weight fluctuation could compromise or even cancel out your results. It is especially important for tummy tuck patients to avoid future pregnancies if possible, which could stretch out newly repaired abdominal muscles and skin.
